Sweepstakes
Hey everyone!
According to Google Translate its definition is gambling on horse races. I've been wondering if there is any other meaning of it as I've seen it in some other context, it seems to me. I cannot remember the sentence, however. In that construction it had the meaning of prize competition or prize game. (I'm not sure if these are correct expressions though).
Thank you!

You can run a sweepstake on any competitive event. For example, office workers sometimes organise sweepstakes based on the result of the World Cup Finals (for football).

That's more or less right. A sweepstakes is a kind of lottery. Basically where the prize money is related to the amount of money put in in bets.
