What is the difference between
Ich esse nicht und ich esse nichts?

Ich esse nicht - I don't eat
Ich esse nichts - I eat nothing
- 1. - "nicht" refers to the action taken, thus you do _not_ eat.
- 2. - "nichts" defines an object, thus you eat _nothing_.
