Or オア
Either-or sentences Hi, for some reason I can hardly find any information on this. I wonder how I can create "Either ACTION1 or ACTION2" sentences. Are the following correct? 1) 私は食べるか飲みます (I will either eat or drink) 私は食べないか飲みます (I will either not eat or drink) 私は食べられかったか飲めました (I could either eat or drink) 2) 彼女の犬は煩いか静かでしょう。(her dog will probably be either quiet or loud) Thank you!

If you want to use 「~か~か」 to say "either/or", here are some general rules; Noun か + Noun + Particle + Sentence Verb Plain Form か + Verb Plain Form か + Sentence Adjective Dictionary Form か + Adjective Dictionary Form か + Sentence "I will either eat or drink" 「私は、食べるか飲むかします」 (You could also say 「私は、食べるか飲むかどちらかにします) "I will either not eat or drink" 「私は、食べないか飲むかします」 (「私は、何も食べないか何かを飲むかどちらかにします」 would sound more natural.) "I could either eat or drink" 「私は、食べるか飲むかできました」 "Her dog will probably be either quiet or loud" 「彼女の犬は、おそらく、静かかうるさいかでしょう」 (「静か」 na-adjective and 「うるさい」 i-adjective) Those sentences above are grammatically correct but I don't quite understand the context of the last sentence. Here are some natural examples for noun, verb and adjective sentences. You could also use 「~か~か」 to say "whether~or" I eat either fruit or yogurt in the mornings. 「私は、朝、果物かヨーグルトを食べる」 I will go to a library or a bookshop to find the book. 「その本を見つけるために、図書館か本屋へ行きます」 Choose either to play a video game or to watch TV. 「ゲームをするかテレビを見るか選びなさい」 I haven't decided yet whether I should go with you or stay at home. 「あなたと一緒に行くか家に残るかまだ決めていません」 The last room will be either small or dirty. 「最後の部屋は小さいか汚いかでしょう」

If you want to say one but not the other, it's 食べるか、または飲む。 食べないか、または飲まない。the か really only work well with nouns, and you need to be a little more careful when it's a whole clause. if it's neither/nor, then 食べたり飲んだりしない。sounds a little better to me. the "or" doesn't make that much sense in the last tense...what are you trying to say with the third one? these are not the only way you can say these things. if the "or" is part of a question you can also use それとも. if it's not strictly one or the other but not both, 食べたり飲んだりする is more than enough (and you can even drop the final する in casual speech). this post might also be helpful. https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/15377/differences-between-それとも-または-もしくは-あるいは
