Good question. It makes no sense if you try to interpret the words literally, does it?
It is a phrase that means something like "Is suitable for" or "gives assistance with" or "helps to".

Lend itself to something means to be suitable for being used in a particular way.
For instance : None of her books really lends itself to being made into a film.
