The single word means "hell" or the "netherworld". I'm not sure how the Chinese use it.
Westerners tend to use "hell" to describe some sort of very bad situation:
"How was work?"
"It was hell! The computers broke down just as the new order came in."
The phrase "from hell" can be used to describe somebody or something that is highly undesirable and bad.
"Did you meet your sister's children?"
"Yes. They were the kids from hell. They were very misbehaved."
I don't know if this captures the sense of what you want. I'm still a beginner when it comes to Chinese.

Hello Iris,
According to "Daoism" , an indigenous traditional religion in China
Yang jian Fa would be the world of the living and
Yin jian Fa the world of the dead.
According to this teaching The 36 hells are the netherworld 阴间 ,where the souls of the deceased dwell. Daoism believes that the deceased will be judged by the Ten Kings of the netherworld. A benevolent person will be reincarnated, while an evil-doer will be subject to punishment in these hells.
阳间would be the mortal world versus the netherworld.

"yang jian"- "mortal world"
"yin jian" - "nether world"
(p.s. correct me if I'm wrong about the pinyin)

According to Chinese traditioinal explaination, 阴间 refers to the place where soul or spirit of dead exist, that is nether world.
阳间 refers to this world.
