Only 'sporting' can be used as an adjective : 'Give him a sporting chance' i.e. give him a fair opportunity [to do sthg.] 'Sports' is a noun [plural of sport] which might be used as a 'compound' noun e.g. 'sports hall', 'sports day' i.e. hall for sports, day of sports.
