Which preposition is correct to use here, "of" or "to"? Hi there, Could someone please tell me which preposition is right to use in the following sentence? 1. I made the first ascent OF Mt. Everest last year. 2. I made the first ascent TO Mt. Everest last year. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, NanakoThank you for your help. I understand that the first sentence works best here. Please kindly allow me to ask another question. If I change the sentence as seen below, now it works better with "to" than with "of"? 1. The ascent TO the top of Mt. Everest was harder than I thought. 2. The ascent OF the top of Mt. Everest was harder than I thought. Thanks.

Hello The first sentence is correct but you need to change it slightly. It should read: 1. I made MY first ascent OF Mt. Everest last year. (The FIRST ascent was made in 1953 by Hilary and Tensing) You can use the word "to" if you slightly change the meaning of the second sentence 2. I made MY first TRIP TO Mt. Everest last year. "To" indicates you travel to somewhere, "Of" indicates you did something to the mountain when you were there (in this case climbed it.
