He's enjoying the sounds and sights of nature. I'm pretty sure it's a red-winged blackbird. Very common in the United States in wetlands, ponds, and marshy areas.
You often see them perched up in the grass, or on cattails (tall grass-like plants with something like a hot dog on top). They make a kind of wonderful sound that is often written as "konk-la-REEEEE."
