いる is the old form of はいる。 They have the same meaning, or the same word. As a verb, you use はいる As a kind of auxiliary verb, you use いる(old form of はいる） But you still can use sometimes いる as a verb. e.g, 気にいる In old Japanese, the word was いる, not はいる, Now it has changed to はいる（這いcrawl＋いる　－＞　はいる） probably because they wanted to get rid of the confusion coming from the other verb 居る（いる）　which has the same pronunciation as 入る（いる） +++ verb はいる（入る・這入る）： 　　- 外側から内側に移動する。 +++ a kind of auxiliary verb ～入る（いる） such as 押し入る、染み入る、聞き入る: - 外から内に入りこむ　－＞　行為の結果が十分な形で実現する。 * When used as an auxiliary verb, you don't confuse it with 居る（いる ）.

入るはほとんど「はいる」と読みます。 「いる」とも読めますが、単独で使うことはなく『聞き入る（ききいる）』『押し入る（おしいる）』のように 何かの言葉につながっていることがほとんどです。 ですので「はいる」と「いる」の意味は同じではありません。

You might as well try "取り入る", "分け入る", and "恥じ入る" when you happen to have time, for example.

"聞き入る" means "listen attentively to". "押し入る" means "break into". "染み入る" means "sink into". I'd say there is something in common in all these phrases, which is fundamentally NOT so different from what "入る (はいる)" means all by itself. If you understand it, you can easily guess what an unknown phrase composed of a verb and "入る (いる)" means.
