what 's the difference between "to the beginning" and "towards the beginning"?
It was only towards the beginning that I was calling him.
Is this same with the sentence "It was only to the beginning that I was calling him"?

No - the second is incorrect:
It was only towards that beginning that I was calling him - in a relationship, meaning 'near the beginning'. You could also say 'at the beginning', but not 'to the beginning'.
You wouldn't use present continuous, nor present simple really as if it's a story or recollection it would be in the past tense [or past continuous]. Thanks! :)
