There is a famous photograph from the 1960’s showing a young woman putting a flower into the barrel of a gun.  You can put the stem of the flower into the barrel of the gun, just like putting a flower into a vase.  The soldier did not hit the girl, maybe because he was under orders not to use violence or maybe just because he didn’t feel threatened.  Other countries have similar examples of non-violent protest, when unarmed people have approached government soldiers; sometimes the soldiers react violently, other times they do not.
