grammatical point I'm confused by '' when sensItively deployed'' in this context! I my opinion the phrase should have been written this way: when they are sensItively deployed! is there any grammatical point which allows us to drop '' they are'' in some situations? High-tech tools can supplement, if they cannot replace, the voice of an artist now silenced. They not only help conservators understand how a work was made but, when sensItively deployed, can help them recover the living artist from the evidence of the mute painting. Thank you

« They » was already used at the beginning of the sentence so you don’t need to repeat it because we’re still talking about the same subject. THEY not only help conservators understand how a work was made but, when sensItively deployed...

It's OK. It's a participle clause that can be transformed into a clause as you suggest, but in this form the sentence isn't overloaded and everything is clear.
