Please look at below paragraph and help me? What does “ break the law” mean?
“We wrote letters at Christmas, but after a few years our letters stopped. I heard they were living in New York. Tristan had an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Then I read in the paper that he had died in 1986. I never saw Sylvia again. I tried to find her, but with no luck. Now my paintings of Sylvia bring back wonderful memories of summer."
"Would you break the law to get more of those memories?” Michael asked.

To 'break the law' means to do something that is illegal, or against the law.
Similarly, someone who is a rulebreaker, is someone who breaks, or goes against the rules.
In this case, Michael is asking the listener if they are willing to do something against the law in order to gain more memories.
(This topic is so interesting! What does he decide?! How suspenseful! haha)
