What dose the"they" refer to?in fact，our teacher says that the "they" refers to plebeians,and the end of the sentence omits"speeches",but I don't quite understand it,and I think it may refers to "speeches"
can anyone tell me which one is better?

I think it depends on the context.If others discussed his speeches,"They" means the others,otherwise,"They" means "His speeches".

His speeches discussed (dealt with) the more refined aspects of life..
He aimed this discussion of the more refined at the plebeian minds and emotions.
