🇯🇵 How much Japanese can you create from just one photograph?
I took this photograph at Nikko Toshogu, one of Japan’s most visually striking historical sites.
When learning Japanese, it is easy to stop at:
「きれいです。」
“It’s beautiful.”
That sentence is correct—but your thoughts probably don’t end there.
Here are three different ways to describe the same photograph:
🌱 Beginner
「大きくて、きれいな建物です。金色の飾りがたくさんあります。」
It is a large, beautiful building with many golden decorations.
🌿 Intermediate
「細かい装飾がたくさんあり、とても華やかな印象を受けます。」
There are many intricate decorations, giving it a very ornate impression.
🌳 Advanced
「建物全体の豪華さだけでなく、細部まで施された装飾にも目を奪われます。」
Not only is the building magnificent as a whole, but the decorations in every detail are also captivating.
Useful expressions:
「華やか」= gorgeous, colorful and splendid
「豪華絢爛(ごうかけんらん)」= extremely luxurious and magnificent
「目を奪われる」= to be captivated by what you see
「細部まで」= down to the smallest details
Now it’s your turn:
この写真を見て、最初に何が目に入りましたか?
どんな印象を受けましたか?
あなたの国にも、細部まで美しく装飾された歴史的建造物がありますか?
In my lessons, photographs like this become more than vocabulary exercises.
You’ll practice observing, describing, comparing, expressing impressions and gradually turning a simple answer into a real Japanese conversation.
You don’t need perfect Japanese. We start with the Japanese you already know and build from there. 📷
