Have you ever heard of BIBI? She is a rookie Korean singer who has been quickly generating a buzz in the local music scene since the release of her 2019 debut single “BINU.” BIBI initially made her name on “The Fan,” the 2018-2019 singing competition show she finished as a runner-up. Afterward, she signed with Feel Ghood Music, the music label run by Tiger JK and Yoon Mi-rae. Under the music label, she released “BINU” in March 2019, starting her career as a professional singer. I know it was a bit late, but I finally got to listen to "BINU" last night. In this song, the 22-year-old singer cheerfully sings about cleansing her soul with binu("soap" in Korea) like she would clean her body with it. I thought the lyrics are super cute that I actually smiled while listening. In particular, the chorus where she repeats the word "binu" is so catchy and adorable that it stays in listeners' heads. (I'm sure I even heard it in my dream last night.) Despite her cute persona shown in "BINU," it's wrong to just peg her as a cutesy, perky girl. In her latest hip R&B singles such as "KAZINO" and "cigarette and condom," you can see her easily pulling off femme-fatale personas with different styles of singing, which bring good surprises to me. (In fact, one of her nicknames given by her fans is "the darkened IU," based on her silky voice and provocative lyrics that remind them of a dark version of IU.) Even though she’s already making it big, I'm 100% sure that she’s gonna get way bigger than now.
