Hi I am a British native and live between Edinburgh, Scotland and London, England so experience both English and Scottish on a regular basis. Main differences are the terms used in everyday language. In Scotland everyday you'll hear this rather than standard English: "Aye" which means yes "wee” means little or small "ken" means know "cannae" means cannot "huvnae" means have not "Dinnae" means don't "Dae" means do And the list goes on. I'll just add that Scottish Gaelic is in the Celtic branch (which includes Irish Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton, for example) of the European languages, unlike English (and Scots) which are in the Germanic branch. Other members of the Germanic branch include High German (Deutsch), Dutch (Netherlandish / Hollansk, Afrikaans, Flemish). Nowadays, most people in Scotland speak English with more or less of a Scottish accent, as well as some regional typical vocabulary. A "thick" Scottish accent can be difficult (or impossible) for other native English speakers to understand.

There is a Scottish language called Scottish Gaelic, and also a language called Scots. There is also English spoken with a Scottish accent and with Scottish slang and Scottish idioms.
