Hi! My name is Taraneh. I’m from Iran and have been living in the US & Canada for the past decade. I currently live in Montreal where I’m the director and professor of the Persian program at McGill University.
I’ve received my PhD in Linguistics from the University of Illinois and have a Master’s in Language Education from Tehran University.
I’ve been teaching different levels and types of Persian courses in North American universities since 2016. Throughout my professional/academic career, I’ve had the joy of teaching students from all kinds of backgrounds, whether heritage speakers or those discovering Persian for the first time. Years ago, my passion for language teaching made me change my career path from being an engineer to a highly professional language teacher and linguist. Best decision of my life! My diverse experience with different students, learning materials, and topic courses allows me to help my students find, and stick to, what works for them depending on their interests and learning goals. I believe that language and culture are intertwined, so I always teach language through interacting with culture, be it more on the ‘traditional’ side (e.g. literature, proverbs) or on the more ‘modern’ side (e.g. following social media trends). All this makes my approach to teaching Persian unique and efficient!دروسي وأسلوب تدريسي
My teaching style is always tailored to my students’ interests and learning objectives as I create a personalized plan for each student. For a general course, that would involve learning Persian vocabulary, grammar, and reading/writing/listening/speaking skills, I usually draw on a variety of different textbooks to create a basic structure for the course and then complement this with various fun multimedia authentic materials (e.g. music, podcasts, news, poems, stories, movies, memes, etc.) and online resources depending on the student’s proficiency level and their interests. Learning a new alphabet/script has never been so much fun and without major difficulty! This teacher is absolutely excellent! I cannot recommend her enough.

I enjoy learning Farsi with Professor Taraneh! It has (so far) been proven to not be too difficult but she makes every lesson very clear and fun. She explains very precisely how to write each letter in Farsi and we go over so many examples. It is great! I definitely recommend her if you want to learn how to write Farsi.

I've been taking lessons with Dr. Taraneh for a few weeks now and they have been incredibly helpful -- she is an excellent teacher who has always been able to answer my questions and provide useful learning materials to improve my Farsi. She has been very patient and understanding in correcting my mistakes and helping me grow in confidence with speaking, reading, and writing, and has provided interesting cultural context for the materials we read in class.
