I am an online English teacher with a 120-hour CELTA certification and hundreds of hours of experience on Italki. My work here focuses on conversation practice, test preparation, writing and editing, and literature. I come from a background in business journalism and college teaching. My classroom experiences included teaching English and philosophy courses to inmates of Nevada state prisons through a program offered by Carson City-based Western Nevada College. I also taught at Feather River College in Quincy, California where I was on the adjunct faculty. I did my CELTA training in New York City. I'm a native speaker of American English.

It was a wonderful lesson! Mike is a super-professional English teacher. He not only explains well but also feels when the student finds it difficult to answer and selects simpler words and expressions. Thanks a lot to Mike for your patience and your time! Sincerely, your student, Sergio! I recommend this teacher to everyone!

When Lord Acton stated, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely," he did not specify that this phenomenon is necessarily confined to any particular political system. Power exists within every political framework; it is just that some systems possess a stronger inclination toward the separation of powers. Yet, is such an inclination inherently permanent? When leaders in democratic nations begin to suppress freedom of speech, openly vilify political rivals, and shift all blame onto their opponents, is it possible that, in the long run, the "arc of history" might shift its trajectory, leading these nations away from the democracy they once knew?

A psychological study has shown that our estimations are also highly sensitive to contextual influences: when presented with the same set of 30 dots, we tend to underestimate their number if they are surrounded by only 10 dots, yet overestimate them if surrounded by 100 dots. This illustrates how easily our judgment is swayed by surrounding circumstances—during bull markets, we believe stocks will rise forever; in bear markets, we lose all confidence entirely. This susceptibility is even more pronounced when it comes to our assessments of current events or historical trends. In this light, Hegel’s maxim deserves deep reflection: “The march of world history stands outside virtue, vice, and justice.”

Nationalization is a nightmare for conservatives. As Ronald Reagan consistently believed, "Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." This conviction is very much in the tradition of the Tories. Winston Churchill once criticized the inefficiency of state-led social redistribution policies, summarizing his view with the famous analogy: "It is like dipping a hand into one person's pocket to put money into another's, and inevitably, some of the money falls on the ground, so waste is inevitable." In Churchill's eyes, the state was like that restless hand, always wanting to intervene in politics, society, and the economy in an attempt to do good, but often only succeeding in making things worse.
