I went from not speaking a single word of Swahili besides “hakuna matata” to being able to make small talk and have surface level conversation in only a few short months to prepare for a trip to Tanzania. He has a VERY excellent grasp on how to teach a language effectively, and a very good instinct for understanding common mistakes from English speakers because he is also a great English speaker himself who has learned from the other direction. I have had many language teachers over the years and I can tell you Xavery is one of the best I’ve had. I'm so thankful and grateful to be formally learning noun classes with a native certified Swahili teacher! Another fantastic class in Swahili with Mwalimu Xavery in which we discussed topics such as traveling, family histories, colonialism, work, etc. Throughout the discussion, Mwalimu guided me through different noun classes structures, taught me some new words and helped me form sentences I was struggling to construct in Swahili. I was also able to read the new vocabulary words thanks to the online document that he shared with me. It is an incredible feeling to see the progress made between now and when I started learning Swahili three years ago. A giant part of this progress is thanks to Mwalimu Xavery who has been my teacher for more than 2.5 years. Asante sana kwa kazi yako, Xavery, wewe ni balaa kubwa na ninashukuru sana kwa msaada wako.

This is my son's 15th lesson - starting weekly lessons with Xavery some months ago to learn Swahili. Not only is my son extremely motivated (we are going back to volunteer again in Tanzania this July) - but Xavery has been fabulous in getting my son to the stage where he can have simple conversations across a range of subjects. As always, Mwalimu Xavery delivered another excellent Swahili class in which I was able to have a conversation 100% in Swahili about global issues such as bilateral relations between Tanzania and other countries, international development, travel, etc all while practicing noun classes and moods and building on my vocabulary. Without ever having step foot in Tanzania, it is always astounding to me that I am now able to hold a one-hour conversation in Swahili thanks to Xavery's guidance, support, patience, kindness and expertise.
