Note: I currently offer classes from 6am-8am & 4:30pm-6:30pm on Mondays. I work full time outside of iTalki so have little flexibility outside of this.
I love languages / linguistics. My languages:
1. Swahili (fluent)
2. Chichewa (fluent - I lived in Malawi for 3 years, and my wife is a native speaker so I get plenty of practice)
3. Spanish (proficient - I haven't used it a lot recently so have forgotten a good amount)
4. Amharic (proficient - I lived in Ethiopia for almost a year and learned this. Amharic is, in my opinion, the hardest language I've ever studied)
5. Russian (basics - I studied it in grad school but haven't used it since)
6. French (currently learning)عني كمعلّم
I have been teaching English for 10 years, inside and outside of the United States. I primarily have experience teaching refugees in the US (particularly one-on-one) and I spent 2 years teaching English to secondary school students in Malawi, a small land-locked nation in Southern Africa. I have a TEFL certification in English and an LPI (OPI) certification from the ACTFL in Chichewa. I think there is a place for native and non-native speakers in teaching. I can help a lot with the grammar and rules of Chichewa, since I had to learn them all myself.دروسي وأسلوب تدريسي
ENGLISH: I treat most lessons more like conversations. I take notes as we talk and share these with you in a Word Doc after the lesson so that you can learn what you have done well and what still needs improvement. I usually organize by grammatical topic, pronunciation issues, and new vocabulary learned. I do not give corrections during the lesson unless the student requests it. I tailor each lesson to the individual student and we will learn at your pace and comfort level.
CHICHEWA: I use a different, much more structured lesson style (with PowerPoints) you can find in the Chichewa lesson description. All of my Chichewa lessons have been reviewed by a native speaker to ensure accuracy.موادي الخاصة بالتدريس

3+/3+ ILR Certificate - International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) - 2021Intensive full-time immersive course in Swahili in preparation for a job in East Africa. For five months, I spoke exclusively in Swahili for 5 hours a day with a one-on-one tutor, and used another 3 hours for daily self-study. I achieved a 3+/3+ which is higher than the required level to use the language in a professional setting for the company I worked for at the time.

160 Hour TEFL - TEFL Full Circle - 2021A 160-hour Course which reviewed various teaching methodologies, their strengths and drawbacks, as well as specific grammatical and phonetic qualities of English.

LPI Certificate in Chichewa - Superior - Peace Corps Malawi - 2019An extended oral interview which contained random and unexpected bits of small talk, along with a difficult scenario question surrounding an abstract topic. My scenario was to describe in detail how gender roles differed in the United States and Malawi, whether this was good or bad, and how the country should go about resolving negative aspects related to these gender norms. I scored a Superior, the highest possible score on the Peace Corps version of the ACTFL ranking system.

I can recommend Austin 1000%. I had 11 Chichewa lessons with him, and I loved his lessons and the flexibility in accommodating to what I needed. I requested to learn from Chichewa conversations, thus we did this. At the end of a lesson he had always written down the words/grammar I missed in a google doc, super effective to learn from. He is also very reliable and responsive: always there, and multiple times he put additional effort in creating extra time slots for me when he had run out.
