Dr Amirthakadeswarar

I am a professor of public health in the United States and have been taking Tamil lessons with Dr. Amirthakadeswarar for a month now. I am incredibly impressed by the breath of his knowledge of Tamil and by his love for the language and his dedication to impart that love to his students. To learn a language well, it is not enough merely to learn the vocabulary and the grammar. It is also incumbent upon the student to deeply understand the roots of the language and to appreciate its inherent beauty, through exposure to its poetry and literature. My desire to learn Tamil is to improve my ability to be able to communicate with communities about the science of public health, and while we learn that, Dr. A also shares his bountiful expertise about the history and culture underlying the language. He is a kind and patient teacher and is a pleasure to work with him. I can say with confidence that it is extremely rare to find another teacher like him and I strongly recommend him.

Prof Amirthakadeswarar is a scholar of Tamil language and literature. This means he is able to help students to not only speak and read Tamil but also understand the grammar. He can explain the language to all levels. For these reasons, he is a rare teacher on this platform. I encourage all who are interested in learning tamil to take a lesson from him.

Dr. Amirthakadeswarar is an incredibly creative and engaged teacher. He is constantly able to create sentences and dialogues that incorporate new words or grammatical topics that we are studying. He exposes me to a wide variety of Tamil culture, from films to poems, to comedy sketches, to the news. It all serves to give me a good understanding of both the language and of Tamil people.

My professor has a vast knowledge of Tamil and world culture, history, ancient customs. His classes are absolutely brilliant!

This was an excellent first class. You can tell he really LOVES the Tamil language, because in addition to talking about my practical goals, he also shared a lot about Tamil history and the Tamil sensibility or Tamil “heart,” including a good book recommendation. Because I said I was a Christian, he even played me some Tamil Christian songs at the end! I’m eager to dive in further and had a wonderful first experience.
