Keeping a Kerala House — Chores, Cleaning and the Daily Round | Learn Malayalam #177
Descripción
Unglamorous vocabulary, and among the most used in the language. If you live in a Kerala household — as family, as a guest of several weeks, or as a tenant with a neighbour who visits — the language of housework is the language of most of the day.
THE DAILY ROUND, IN THE ORDER IT HAPPENS
എഴുന്നേൽക്കുക to get up · പല്ല് തേക്കുക to brush the teeth · കുളിക്കുക to bathe
A note on that last one: Malayalis bathe daily, most commonly in the morning, often twice in hot weather, and bathing is treated as a necessity rather than an option. കുളിച്ചോ? — have you bathed? — is a normal thing to be asked. It is not an insult.
ഭക്ഷണം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക to make food · അടുക്കള വൃത്തിയാക്കുക to clean the kitchen · പാത്രം കഴുകുക to wash the dishes
തുണി അലക്കുക to wash clothes — and അലക്കുക is specifically the washing of CLOTH, a separate verb from കഴുകുക, washing generally
തുണി ഉണക്കാൻ ഇടുക to hang clothes to dry · തുണി മടക്കുക to fold · ഇസ്തിരിയിടുക to iron
And the ഇസ്തിരിക്കാരൻ, the ironing man who collects, presses and returns your clothes for a small charge, is still a working institution in many Kerala neighbourhoods.
മുറി അടിച്ചുവാരുക to sweep the room · തുടയ്ക്കുക to mop or wipe · പൊടി തുടയ്ക്കുക to dust
മുറ്റം അടിക്കുക to sweep the courtyard — genuinely daily in a house with a compound, done early, usually before six
ചെടിക്ക് വെള്ളം ഒഴിക്കുക to water the plants · മാലിന്യം കളയുക to throw out the rubbish · കിടക്ക വിരിക്കുക to make the bed
ചൂല് is the broom — and Kerala has two: the coconut-frond-spine broom for the yard, and the soft grass broom for indoors.
