One of the most famous cases in the study of cross-cultural communication comes from a staff canteen in Britain in the 1970s. Serving staff newly arrived from South Asia were offering gravy to customers with the single word "Gravy." said with a falling tune. The British customers heard it as rude, as if the servers were saying "this is gravy, take it or leave it".
What you will learn:
• The canteen case, step by step
• Why the offer falls
• The offers and invitations that fall
• Suggestions that fall
• Re-reading tone through the speaker's system
• When A fall is not an offer
• Scenes
