"Where you are going?" "You want tea?" "Don't you like it?" "Yes." Questions cause many small breakdowns at home. Many languages make a question just by raising the voice, or keep the normal word order, so learners translate directly and leave out "do." Even trickier, in some languages "yes" to a negative question means "yes, I agree, I don't." In English it means the opposite. In this episode you learn the question patterns Americans use, the little tags at the end like "right?" and "isn't it?", and how to answer without confusion. In this episode: • Word order: the helper comes first • Casual short questions and melody • Tag questions • Easy tags: right? huh? you know? • Negative questions and how to answer • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: Do you want some tea? — a simple offer (neutral) Does Leo eat eggs? — he, she or it takes "does" Did you lock the door? — past Are you coming? — with "be," no "do" Where are you going? — question word, then helper, then subject What time does the store close? — not "What time the store closes?" Who made this cake? — not "Who did make this cake?" What happened? — not "What did happen?" You hungry? — are you hungry? (casual) Want some? — do you want some? (casual) Need a hand? — do you need help? (casual) Ready? — are you ready? It's cold today, isn't it? — "is" becomes "isn't" You're coming, aren't you? — "are" becomes "aren't" She works on Saturdays, doesn't she? — "works" uses "does" You didn't eat yet, did you? — negative sentence, positive tag We can walk, can't we? — "can" becomes "can't" Season 2 · Real American English: the complete spoken course for learners worldwide — accent, everyday grammar, prepositions, articles, phrasal verbs, idioms, slang and real conversations at home.
