Persuading and Negotiating in Malayalam — Part 3: Five Steps, Holding Firm | Learn Malayalam #278
Descripción
Persuading someone in a way that works, rather than in a way that satisfies you, is the hardest conversational skill in any language.
A Kerala argument is not front-loaded. You establish shared ground, concede something real, raise the difficulty as a shared problem, give one concrete consequence and hand the conclusion over. This class gives you the sentences for each step, then the language of negotiating (and knowing when not to), the quiet, unbudging repetition that lets you hold a position without escalating, and the closing line that keeps the relationship intact.
Words and phrases in this class:
നമുക്ക് രണ്ടുപേർക്കും വേണ്ടത് ഒന്നുതന്നെയാണ് (namukku randuperkkum vendathu onnuthanneyaanu) – what we both want is the same thing
ഇത് നിങ്ങൾക്കും നല്ലതാണ് (ithu ningalkkum nallathaanu) – this is good for you too
അതിൽ കാര്യമുണ്ട് (athil kaaryamundu) – there's something in that
ഒരു ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ട് (oru buddhimuttundu) – there is one difficulty
നിങ്ങൾ എന്ത് പറയുന്നു? (ningal enthu parayunnu?) – what do you say?
ഫിക്സഡ് ആണോ? (fixed aano?) – is the price fixed?
ഒരു ചെറിയ കുറവ് ചെയ്യാമോ? (oru cheriya kuravu cheyyaamo?) – can you make a small reduction?
അവസാന വില എത്ര? (avasaana vila ethra?) – what's the final price?
ഞാൻ ഒന്ന് ആലോചിക്കട്ടെ (njaan onnu aalochikkatte) – let me think about it
ഞാൻ പിന്നെ വരാം (njaan pinne varaam) – I'll come back later
ക്ഷമിക്കണം, പറ്റില്ല (kshamikkanam, pattilla) – sorry, it isn't possible
ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞല്ലോ, എനിക്ക് പറ്റില്ല (njaan paranjallo, enikku pattilla) – as I said, I can't
മറ്റെല്ലാ കാര്യത്തിലും ഞാൻ സഹായിക്കാം (mattellaa kaaryathilum njaan sahaayikkaam) – in everything else I'll help
In this class:
• The five steps, from shared ground to handing over the conclusion
• Negotiating politely, and why a theatrical haggle backfires
• Holding a position by calm repetition
• Closing with the relationship intact
