The Future of Malayalam — 35 Million Speakers and Where You Go Next | Learn Malayalam #316
Descripción
An honest look at what is happening to Malayalam in this century — and a working plan for what a learner does next.
WHERE THE LANGUAGE STANDS
Roughly thirty-five million speakers. Official language of Kerala and of Lakshadweep, with substantial communities in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, across the Gulf, and in a global professional diaspora. Granted classical language status by the Government of India in 2013. A publishing industry, the highest newspaper readership in India, a film industry currently drawing international attention, and a digital footprint far larger than its speaker numbers would predict.
By any ordinary measure that is a healthy language.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY WORTH WATCHING
Not speaker numbers, which are fine. The questions are subtler: which domains the language keeps and which it cedes to English; whether children in Malayali households outside Kerala go on producing it or only understanding it; and whether the written registers stay in daily use or retreat to the newspaper and the courtroom. Languages rarely die of small numbers. They shrink domain by domain, and each retreat looks harmless at the time.
WHERE YOU GO FROM HERE
A course that ends without a plan has wasted your effort. The lesson lays out what to read, what to listen to, how to keep speaking without a teacher, and what to do in the first month after finishing.
What are you going to use your Malayalam FOR? Answer that in the comments — it is the single best predictor of whether you keep it.
