An earlier class gave you a method for learning from films. This one is about the films themselves. This class explains why Malayalam cinema has a reputation for realism, and where that comes from: decades of film societies showing world cinema to ordinary audiences in small towns, which made those audiences unusually demanding. You learn the film vocabulary, from the everyday പടം to തിരക്കഥ, and get a short tour of the eras. That leads to why the newer, naturalistic films are the right place to start. Then the practical advice: which kinds of film to avoid at first, why domestic and food films suit learners, and the watching method with one extra step. Words and phrases in this class: സിനിമ (cinema) – film പടം (padam) – film (the everyday word) നല്ല പടമാണ് (nalla padamaanu) – it's a good film സംവിധായകൻ (samvidhaayakan) – director നടൻ (nadan) – actor നടി (nadi) – actress തിരക്കഥ (thirakkatha) – screenplay ഛായാഗ്രഹണം (chhaayaagrahanam) – cinematography പാട്ട് (paattu) – song അഭിനയം (abhinayam) – acting കഥ (katha) – story തിയേറ്റർ (theatre) – cinema hall സബ്ടൈറ്റിൽ (subtitle) – subtitle In this class: • Where the reputation comes from: film societies and a demanding audience • The film vocabulary, from പടം to തിരക്കഥ • The eras in brief, and why newer realist films are where learners should start • What to avoid at first, and the watching method with one addition Quizzes below.
