You learn പുസ്തകം (pusthakam) = book and ഉണ്ട് (undu) = there is, and you expect to hear two words. Then a Malayali says പുസ്തകമുണ്ട് (pusthakamundu) = there's a book, as one smooth word, and you lose it. English speakers listen for gaps between words, because English keeps words fairly separate. In this episode: • Rule one: the half u drops before a vowel • Rule two: final m and n just connect • Rule three: glides y and v between vowels • Rule four: -am words change before endings • Rule five: spoken squeezes • An invented scene: a fast morning • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: എനിക്ക് + അറിയില്ല → എനിക്കറിയില്ല (enikkariyilla) = I don't know ചോറ് + ഉണ്ട് → ചോറുണ്ട് (chorundu) = There's rice അത് + എന്താ → അതെന്താ? (athenthaa?) = What's that? ഇത് + ആരാ → ഇതാരാ? (ithaaraa?) = Who's this? പുസ്തകം + ഉണ്ട് → പുസ്തകമുണ്ട് (pusthakamundu) = There's a book അവൻ + ആണ് → അവനാണ് (avanaanu) = It's him ഞാൻ + ഉം → ഞാനും (njaanum) = me too സമയം + ആയി → സമയമായി (samayamaayi) = It's time അമ്മ + ഉം → അമ്മയും (ammayum) = Amma too കുട്ടി + ഉം → കുട്ടിയും (kuttiyum) = the child too വഴി + ഇൽ → വഴിയിൽ (vazhiyil) = on the way അമ്മ + എവിടെ → അമ്മയെവിടെ? (ammayevide?) = Where's Amma? പശു + ഉം → പശുവും (pashuvum) = the cow too പശു + ഇന് → പശുവിന് (pashuvinu) = for the cow പുസ്തകം → പുസ്തകത്തിൽ (pusthakathil) = in the book മരം → മരത്തിൽ (marathil) = in the tree മരം → മരത്തിന്റെ (marathinte) = of the tree വീട് → വീട്ടിൽ (veettil) = at home: here the d sound doubles into tt.
