Level C2 (approx. band 8.5-9) · Academic and General Training Many band 7 speakers sound accurate but scripted. They open every answer with "In my opinion", link with "Moreover" and "Furthermore", and state everything at full strength. Proficient speakers sound different: they use small words like "well", "mind you" and "to be fair" to guide the listener, they soften strong opinions, and they use understatement. In this episode: • "well" and "i suppose": buying time and softening • "mind you" and "to be fair": adding balance • Understatement and politeness • Sounding natural, not scripted • Listening lab • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key points: • "Well" signals thought; "I suppose" signals a softened, reasoned view. • "Mind you" adds a twist; "to be fair" defends what you just criticised. • Understatement says less than you mean, and listeners understand the full meaning. • Natural speech reacts to the question; scripted speech ignores it.
