        有一顶帽子被做出来的时候忘记染颜色了，所以它来到商店时还是灰灰的，它一直都没有被卖出去，甚至从来没被注意过。
        后来店主把帽子给了一个年轻的店员，这个店员回到家里把帽子送给了妻子，妻子很生气，因为丈夫送给她一顶很难看的帽子。过了一会儿他们的小女儿回来了，看到帽子就把它带到空地上，和小伙伴们用帽子玩儿游戏，她玩儿得正开心，突然听到妈妈喊她回家吃饭，她就急忙地跑回家，帽子被她忘得一干二净。
        到了晚上，灰帽子觉得自己的生命已经走到了尽头。但这时一只鸟停在它的身边，看了看灰帽子，高兴地说：“我正需要这样一个窝！”它把帽子放在高高的树杈上，呼唤着自己的伴侣。两只鸟儿都很满意，因为这个鸟窝一点儿都不引人注目。
