In Kerala, animals are part of ordinary life: the cow at the gate, the crow at the kitchen window, the gecko above the dinner table. This class gives you the animals you will actually meet and talk about, from പട്ടി and പൂച്ച to പല്ലി, ഉറുമ്പ് and കൊതുക്. It explains the Dravidian split of nouns into rational and irrational, which is why you ask എന്താണ് വന്നത്? about an animal but ആരാണ് വന്നത്? about a person, and why there is no gender list to memorise. Then come the sentences you will really say, including how to ask whether a dog bites and what to shout when you see a snake. Words and phrases in this class: പട്ടി (patti) – dog (everyday word) പൂച്ച (poocha) – cat പശു (pashu) – cow കാക്ക (kaakka) – crow പല്ലി (palli) – gecko, house lizard ഉറുമ്പ് (urumbu) – ant കൊതുക് (kothuku) – mosquito പൂമ്പാറ്റ (poombaatta) – butterfly എന്താണ് വന്നത്? (enthaanu vannathu?) – what came? (asked of an animal) ആരാണ് വന്നത്? (aaraanu vannathu?) – who came? (asked of a person) പട്ടി കടിക്കുമോ? (patti kadikkumo?) – does the dog bite? പേടിക്കണ്ട, ഒന്നും ചെയ്യില്ല (pedikkanda, onnum cheyyilla) – don't be afraid, it won't do anything അവിടെ പോകണ്ട, പാമ്പുണ്ടാകും (avide pokanda, paambundaakum) – don't go there, there may be a snake In this class: • The animals of daily Kerala life, and പട്ടി versus നായ • Rational and irrational nouns: why an animal takes എന്ത്, not ആര് • Real sentences about dogs, crows, lizards, ants and snakes • Malayalam animal sounds, which are not the English ones Quizzes below.
