How Statements End: Rising, Level and Falling Endings, and "Confirmed" Beats the Tune | Understanding Indian English #063
Descripción
Listeners trained on American or British English judge certainty from the last half-second of a sentence. A fall means "I am sure." A rise means "I am not sure, help me." A level ending means "I have more to say." Indian English does not run on that dial. Many speakers end a confident statement with a rise, a level pitch, or a long, slightly lifted final syllable, and the words carry the certainty instead.
What you will learn:
• Three endings, one meaning
• The rising ending and why it is common
• The level ending and phrase-final lengthening
• The "List continues" ending
• Judge certainty from the words
• Scenes: office, shop, hospital, phone
• Practice: decode the sentence
• Listening strategies
• Self-check questions to test your ear
Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes.
Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
