British stations are noisy, announcements are fast, and plans change at the last minute. Learners often catch every word of a textbook dialogue but miss "the eleven fourteen is now departing from platform six". Many also translate directly and ask "One ticket going and coming, please" instead of "A return, please", or "Where is the way of the beach?" instead of "Is this the right way to the beach?". In this episode: • Before you listen: key words • The scene with decode lines • Listen again for details • Announcements and times • Shadowing • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: a single — a ticket for one way only a return — a ticket there and back a family ticket — one cheaper ticket for parents and children together off-peak — the cheaper times, when fewer people travel to work the departure board — the big screen showing trains and platforms a platform change — the train will leave from a different platform delayed — late; "running late" in casual speech change at... — get off and take another train at that station please mind the gap — be careful of the space between the train and the platform the ten fifteen — the train that leaves at 10.15 the eleven oh four — the train at 11.04; zero is said as oh eighteen forty-five — 18.45, a twenty-four-hour timetable time is now departing — is leaving now is delayed by ten minutes — will be ten minutes late calling at — stopping at the next station is... — we are arriving at... Could I get a single to Westbridge, please? — polite request at the ticket office Real British English: the complete spoken course for learners worldwide — modern British accent, everyday grammar, phrasal verbs, idioms, slang, he/she/it for things, and real conversations at home.
