Numbers cause real problems at home: the wrong bus, the wrong price, the wrong phone number. Thirteen and thirty sound close, and on a noisy phone call they're easy to mix up. Many learners also translate directly from their own language and say "one hundred twenty" or "two thousand six", leaving out the little word "and" that British speakers always use. In this episode: • Teens or tens? • Checking a number • Big numbers with and • Oh, zero, nought or nil? • Phone numbers in groups • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: thirteen (thur-TEEN) — 13 thirty (THUR-tee) — 30 fourteen (for-TEEN) — 14; no R sound in Standard British forty (FOR-tee) — 40; spelled without a U fifteen (fif-TEEN) — 15 fifty (FIF-tee) — 50 sixteen (six-TEEN) — 16 sixty (SIX-tee) — 60 seventeen (sev-un-TEEN) — 17 seventy (SEV-un-tee) — 70 eighteen (ay-TEEN) — 18; only one T sound eighty (AY-tee) — 80 nineteen (nine-TEEN) — 19 ninety (NINE-tee) — 90 Nan's turning ninety on Saturday. — a birthday The cake needs forty minutes in the oven. — cooking We live at number fourteen. — a house number Oliver's got sixteen pages of reading. — homework Sorry, was that thirteen or thirty? — simple check (neutral) Sorry, could you say that again? — asking for repetition (polite) Fifteen.
