The extremism pendulum.
In a world that appears to become more and more polarised by the day it is extremely easy to let yourself be swept away by extremist currents. As someone who likes to consider himself a logical person, I often find myself with enemies on both sides, each accusing me of belonging to the other one. It is surreal.
The mechanism is pretty simple: as soon as something is deemed "unjust" by a group of people (often rightfully so), they swing to the complete opposite direction, overcompensating the old excess with a brand new one. The process repeats and the cultural gap between the two extremisms widens until it is no longer possible to communicate.
It comes to the point where, even if you agree with a certain idea, you either subscribe to everything its supporters say - no matter how absurd - or you are part of "the enemy".
We will not solve any of our problems until we learn how to resist radicalisation.
