Hello! Could anyone help me to grasp the difference between "an application letter" and "cover(ing) letter" for applying to university? Particularly, in the USA and the UK.
I would appreciate your help!

In theory, in a work context, an application letter is a C.V. in narrative form. It should expand on your experience and qualification in the absence of a C.V. A cover(ing) letter is meant to accompany a C.V. typically highlight more personal attribute with a slight reference to item in your C.V.
As for a university, you need to tell them why they should accept you. Very generally speaking, a 'Past, Present, Future' format is most practical. For example, what you previously studied, why you want to attend this university now and what you plan on doing in the future after your studies.

An application letter may or may not be paired with a CV. But a Cover Letter is always paired with a CV, and acts as the 'front cover' to the collection.

Hello! Great question — it confuses a lot of people.
📌 In the USA
A cover letter is the standard term. It usually goes with a job application (not for university).
For universities, the word “application letter” is not common. Instead, people talk about a “personal statement” or “statement of purpose.”
📌 In the UK
You’ll hear both “covering letter” and “cover letter.” It’s the same thing — just British vs. American style.
For universities, the main written part is the UCAS personal statement, not a cover letter.
👉 In short:
Cover(ing) letter = job applications.
Application letter = rarely used for universities in the US/UK. For universities, think personal statement or SOP.
⚡ I don’t usually open my coaching broadly, but if you act quickly, you can book a call with me where I’ll help you shape your personal statement and prepare your communication for interviews. Spots for this offer are very limited.
