Greetings Turá! You folks in italki land sure have some interesting questions. "Appearance and looks." I can't think of any hard and fast rule about the differences. But, I will base my answer upon personal experience. I think that the word looks is often (not always) used when describing a person. "Her charm and good looks are an asset to her career." "He is a handsome man." Looks can be an asset in the way that one presents with his or her appearance. Appearance can be used to describe the way that someone or something looks at a particular time. One can have beautiful physical looks, but a disheveled appearance. An office building can have a messy appearance. But remember, a room can look messy too. The use of words in English are often dependent upon context, as in other languages I am sure. I simply shared some ideas with you. These usages are not carved in stone. Good luck with your learning goals!

Very good question. "Look" is a fascinating word because it seems so backwards. If I say she has "good looks", it is I who looks, not she, and yet she is the one who "has" the looks. So, when you say she "has looks", it means that other people are looking AT her. Saying that she is "good looking" does not just say that she is pretty. It says her appearance draws eyes towards herself like a magnet. That, to me, is the difference. "Appearance" is her physical aspect. You have an appearance whether or not anyone sees you. "Looks" are the power your appearance possesses to draw eyes ("looks") in your direction.
