Sentence one refers to the past. Sentence two could refer to the present or even the future.

I agree with Simon, but would add that Sentence #2 can also refer to the past. It is timeless. If further context were provided, it might explicitly refer specifically to the past, the present, or the future, but without such context it has no such timeframe and means the same as:
"Do you have the ability to find the answer without her help?"
For a simpler example, consider the sentence
"If you dropped a stone in water, would it sink?"
which is a sort of physics question and even more obviously timeless.
