Coxinha (Translation: little drumstick) is a typical Brazilian savoury consisting of chopped or shredded chicken, sometimes with melted cheese and spices, covered in dough, molded in a shape that resemble a teardrop or a drumstick, battered and fried. It is more likely to be found accompanied by little Brazilian pastels as a street food, whose price variates from 4,00 to 12,00 reais. However, Coxinha can be a suitable snack or appetiser option at birthday parties and other celebrations, depending on the hosts’ taste.
Besides that, the Coxinha has a noble origin that remounts the Brazilian Imperial Times of the 19th Century. Well, according to Nadir Cavazin in the book Stories & Recipes, it all took place in the State of São Paulo, when the son of Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil, and Prince Gaston, Count of Eu, had chicken as his favorite food, but only ate the drumstick. One day, not having enough drumsticks, the cook decided to shred a full chicken, put it into a dough and fry. Then, he served it to the kid, who endorsed the recipe.
Empress Teresa Cristina, when visiting the boy, fell in love with the dish and committed the master of the Imperial Kitchen to learn how to prepare it.
