What does “ home in on st” mean. It’s such an odd expression. We know the meaning home as somebody’s house.

I checked four major online dictionaries and all of them gave “home in” as a phrasal verb.

Hi Dimin! Welcome to the world of English homonyms. Home can be a noun such as a house. It can also be a verb meaning getting a focus or aiming towards something. Let's go home (house) and home (focus/aim) in on our new satellite show. English is horrible for these homonyms. "It's not fair to pay a fare for the fare at the fair." Fair/fare has different spelling, the exact same pronunciation, and different meanings. Welcome to my world.

It’s “hone”. Hone in on something. Ex I am honing in on this job perspective. The word comes from è honing a sharp blade.

It’s interesting that it sounds odd to you. The idea is that ‘home’ is what is important- where you should be or want to be. My dog was lost in the rubble. I used his whimpering to home in on his location. (Go to where he is) We need to home in on the real reasons for our declining sales. (Find out) You need to stop wasting your time on dating apps and start homing in on Claire, who’s great for you and likes you. (Focus on) ‘hone in’ is an expression with a slightly different meaning.
