In the phrase "oil and gas industry", I think the gas refers to natural gas, not gasoline. Natural gas is a normally a gas, not a liquid (although it can be converted to a liquid or NGL). Gasoline (what we put in the car) is always a liquid at normal temperatures. I don't know what they say in the UK; they may just call it the petrol industry, which is short for the petroleum industry, which would normally include oil and gas, hence "oil and gas industry".
