Will you feel uncomfortable when a person you just met ask you how old you are?
I thought it can be a bit offensive in some countries and cultures to ask people, especially female, questions about their age. But why so many people I met here still ask me that?
In my country, it may not a very rule that you can’t ask people about their age, and usually I’m not bothered to answer that, because people who asking that usually has a good reason: the salers may want to know if the style of clothes/their courses is fit to me, elder people who acquaintance to my parents may want to show their care.
But if you ask me about my age here may make me feel uncomfortable. Because we just come here to learn and practice our language skills, you don’t really need to know about others’ age, right?
However, I don’t want to lose my politeness, so I usually told people who ask me that I’m a student in university, or I just change the topic. Well, at least you can know a rage of my age or feel that I may not want to answer that. But some just keep ask.....(I should probably just say I don’t want to answer 🤦🏻♀️)
No matter how young or how old people are, I think we can know each other well in many different aspects. After all, passion and respect are the best way to make friends.

I ask for someone’s age because I want to know if we’ll have anything in common. Sometimes though you have a willing language partner it can be hard to find things that you have in common. Or to get a good dialogue going. Cultural differences aside. Now if you have creepy experiences with men that’s another story. But for me it’s an innocent question. I can’t exactly talk about boys and k-pop with someone in their 40. Or drinking and partying with a teen.
