Is there any difference between "put one's foot in one's mouth" and "make a slip of the tongue". These sound pretty similar to me. I put my foot in my mouth. I made a slip of the tongue. How do you differenciate them? Thank you in advance.

They are different. I put my foot in my mouth. = To say something foolish or embarrassing or tactless. I made a slip of the tongue. = To say something by mistake, perhaps revealing a secret.

All I can say is “ putting your foot in your mouth” is saying something in a rude and unsubtle way. A slip of the tongue is often unintentional. And possible more subtle

Foot in mouth? First of all gross, second of all what happens if you choke?
