Hi everyone Another question: is there any difference between stand and withstand? To me, they look the same however the second is seemingly more formal. Am I right? Thanks in advance.

Stand means : stand up, I can't stand up anymore by his rudnesses, I can punch him for his rudness, , I can't stand up anymore in cold ,I'm frozen. Withstand means, it's like foundation. This house is designed to withstand earthquake and tsunami, I'm a man who designed to withstand all the criticism from the people regardless of what degree. Withstand (verb) Means u have the capability ,emotionally, and ability to face everything such as trial or some certain Difficult situations whereas stand is a verb as well that u have to stand for the sake of your family ,don't give up, u have to be strong , u need to stand up for the truth, u have to fight for ur land , u need to stand in up for the people. Hope I helped u with.

The difference between the words doesn’t have to do with formality. If you cannot stand something, it means you have had enough of it in general. E.g. ‘I can’t stand this film any longer’ = you’ve watched enough of it to know you don’t like it. Not being able to withstand something usually has something to do with a numeric value. E.g. ‘I only lift 20kgs of weights at the gym because my arms wouldn’t be able to withstand anything heavier’. Hope that make sense :)

Stand means you can tolerate something. Withstand means you also not get affected by that.

Stand means to stand up, if for example someone is sitting down or lying down u can tell the person to stand up, while withstand means when u can't stand the sight of something, for example if someone is maltreating ur pet, then you'll be like I can't withstand this anymore or I can't take this anymore. (Hope it's helpful)
