Spain Prepares for its First Total Solar Eclipse in Over a Century. And you, are you ready?
By Astronomical Reporting Services
On the evening of August 12, 2026, skywatchers across North America, Greenland, Iceland, and Europe will witness a major astronomical event, but Spain will hold center stage. For the first time since 1905, a total solar eclipse will sweep across the Iberian Peninsula, offering millions of residents and visiting umbraphiles (eclipse chasers) a rare view of syzygy in action.
The path of totality will touch land in northern Spain late in the afternoon before slicing diagonally across the country toward the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. Cities such as A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valladolid, and parts of Valencia will experience full solar coverage. Because the eclipse occurs shortly before sunset, the Moon’s umbra will plunge the landscape into twilight while the Sun sits low on the western horizon, setting up a striking visual contrast against the Spanish landscape.
During the peak minutes of totality, the Sun’s faint outer atmosphere—the ethereal solar corona—will become visible to the naked eye, framed briefly at the start and advanend by the brilliant diamond ring effect.

I am still desperately looking for eclipse glasses. I see that they are sold out at many stores.
