Hi everyone. I have a question about candies and subject verb agreement. Is it good English to say, "There are a whole whack of delicious delicious candies in that kitchen cabinet." ?
Thank you.

Hi Sergii,
I think your question is about IS vs. ARE in this sentence, correct?
The very short answer is...for the average native speaker, "There are" and "There is" are probably both fine in this situation.
For the long answer, let's start simple.
There _______ candies in the cabinet. candies...plural...ARE!
There ARE candies in the cabinet.
Now modify...
There ________ many candies in the cabinet. many/candies...plural...ARE!
There ARE many candies in the cabinet.
There _______ a box of candy/candies in the cabinet. ...candy or candies...doesn't matter, because box is the first noun and is singlular....ARE!
There IS a box of candy/candies in the cabinet.
Now your example (approximately)
There ______ a lot of candies in the cabinet.
Question...is 'lot' a noun? Or is "a lot of" ~adjective?
This is where the average English speaker, without consciously thinking about it, decides it is not important. Something deep in their automatic brain says, "I don't care about the nuance."
So in English, you will probably see and hear both examples.
There is a lot of candies in the cabinet. (thinking 'of candies' is making 'a lot' more specific)
There are a lot of candies in the cabinet. (thinking 'a lot of' is describing 'candies')
One way to decide is to try removing the 'of...' part.
There are a lot in the cabinet. If the missing information is not necessary, you can just make the verb agree with 'a lot'. But if you think the candies are more important, you should make the verb agree with that.
So, "There _______ a whole whack in that kitchen cabinet."
Is 'a whole whack', or are candies, more important?
Alternatively, this site says to use 'are' for countable things, and 'is' for uncountable things. That sounds good too.https://englishlessonsbrighton.co.uk/there-is-a-lot-of-vs-there-are-a-lot-of/
I hope this helped!

You can say "There is a whole cabinet of delicious candies in the kitchen." :)

I would say,
“I grabbed the pack of delicious candies from the kitchen cabinet”.
Subject is “I” . However, there needs to be a verb in the sentence to make the subject verb agreement. The verb is that you grabbed the candy from the cabinet.

I would probably just say “there’s a lot of delicious candy”. Or a whole pack of delicious candy.
