Hi, there! Could you tell me what's the difference between alter and change? Thank you in advance.

To Change: Means to replace already existing thing or condition with another thing.
To Alter: Means to add or adjust something to be become better or worse than it was before.

Alter tends to mean a smaller change, for example you would alter a dress, take the hem up etc, to change the dress would mean get another one.

Change meansz( chemically chage)

To alter something is too make a slight edit or change to something.
To change something would be too completely replace or do something more major to it.
Example of alter.
Person 1: “ These pants are a little to long.”
Person 2: “ We can make an alteration to pant legs by Hemming the ankles. “
Example of change.
Person 1: “I need to change my outfit/clothing to something more formal.”

means a small but significant change.
