Who cooks meals at home every day?

Hello, friends.

I know most  foreigners do not eat at home, they buy ready meals or eat meals at the restaurant. In our country every day most people cook meals at home. We must think what to cook today.  All women can cook different meals. Sometimes we get tired of it, but at the same time it is very enjoyable.

So who can cook and who cooks meals at home every day?

There is just me in my home.

I cook my dinners 3 times per week and eat at a restaurant 4 days per week.

But I would not call my cooking "cooking", I would call it "burning" :)  becuase I am the worst cook in the world ;)

"I know most  foreigners do not eat at home, they buy ready meals or eat meals at the restaurant."

That's a huge generalisation based on what evidence?

I agree with James. What do you mean by "most foreigners"? Everyone who is not a citizen of Azerbaijan? Were do you get your knowledge from?

I cook at least two times per day (lunch and dinner) for my family. Sometimes I even cook for breakfast. Most people I know (from my home country and other countries) cook daily. I very seldomly eat out (to expensive) and don't like ready made food (not healthy).

People who are practicing their second, third or in this case fourth language often do not use the correct terminology. It behooves us to take that into account.

In this case, I believe when Leyla wrote "foreigners" she may have meant 'people from highly industrialized, developed countries', and there is ample evidence to see that that is the case; just look at the obesity rates in developed and under-developed countries to see who eat proper nourishing, homecooked meals.

You have raised a good question about lifestyle and gender roles.

I can only write about Britain.  There was a time when most men and women got married and the women were expected to cook.  This was the case up until the mid 1990s(?).  Then in the past 20 years these changes have taken place:

1.  The decline of conventional marriage as a lifestyle choice: many people, of all points on the gender spectrum, are single, live alone and cook for themselves.

2. Health movement: more and more people now believe it is healthier to cook their own food.

3. Gay households: in a marriage or a household of two gay men, both spouses are male.

4.  The rise of the foodie movement: it has become fashionable for men to cook.

5.  TV food programmes: TV chefs like Jamie Oliver have convinced people that cooking is fun and easier and men should not shy away from cooking.  Cooking programmes for kids have taught new generations of people that do not regard cooking as a gender-specific activity: everyone should and can cook for themselves and their families.

6.  New economic gender roles:  Househusbands are becoming more common.  There are more and more households in which the husband stays at home to run the household and the wife is the sole breadwinner.

What is your update on your own country under the six headings above?
