Hyperpolyglots

Hello everyone!

I made this thread to see if there are any hyperpolyglots on this site. If so, I would like to know your methods of learning languages and how you study :)

Thank you

Sean :)

Hi Sean,

A YouTube search on this topic may help you. There are a number of well-known polyglots that post videos of their language learning experiences and tips. From watching these videos, it seems that polyglots tend to...

- focus on learning phrases or language in context as opposed to drilling word lists

- know what resources work for them and use a variety of resources

- have fun with learning a language, instead of "studying" it or seeing it as a chore

- have very specific goals, including timelines, when learning a language

- speak as soon as possible with native speakers. They don't seem to worry about making mistakes

- usually focus on what they want from a language (i.e., just speaking, or writing, or reading) as opposed to learning all the skills and "mastering" a language

The points above are what I've gleaned from watching these types of videos. I'm sure you'll find other tips.

By the way, a polyglot is loosely defined as knowing six or more languages, so they would be just as good a resource as a hyperpolyglot.

What is your definition of "hyperpolyglot"? I found different definitions. Some define hyperpolyglots as people who can speak 6+, 11+ , 16+ or 20+. That is quite a big difference...

Do you know this book: http://www.fluentin3months.com/wp-content/downloads/The_Polyglot_Project.pdf ?Maybe that's interesting for you.
